Andreas Seewald is a "Kazakh German", an ethnic Ge

Andreas Seewald is a "Kazakh German", an ethnic German, whose parents were, in 1941, deported from the Wolga region to #Kazakhstan. He and his family left Kazakhstan after the breakdown of the Soviet Union in 1991 and moved to Germany - like more than one million other Germans from Kazakhstan with a similar background. But unlike many of his relatives and friends Seewald came back to Kazakhstan - as a businessman in construction businesss. He struggled in Germany with finding a job, and with his knowledge and network in Kazakhstan and Germany he had better opportunities in his old home country. I wrote down his story in 2011 - would be interesting to learn, what he does nowadays - I'm upping this story because of the last episode of our @shashlykpodcast, where @othmara.glas and I do an interview with the wonderful @ira_peter. She's also a German from Kazakhstan, and has a somehow similar, but also very different story to tell. I don't cross-post very often, but that's a pictur

I don't cross-post very often, but that's a picture I'd like to draw your attention to. A young woman returns to the house where she had spent her childhood. A couple of years before she had to leave her home together with her parents and sister, because of the civil war, that had unfold in Tajikistan right after the breakdown of the Soviet Union. When Oxana returned to that house for the first time in 2005 it was nearly abandoned, inhabited by the poorest of the poor, with bullet holes all over its walls. That moment, seeing her overwhelmed with emotions, still sticks to my mind. She lives in Germany now, that had welcomed her and her family back then, and she's working as a successful journalist. Three years ago I presented my first book, the Architectural Guide Dushanbe, at the Tajik chaikhana in Berlin. It was one of the greatest experiences of my time as foreign correspondent in Central Asia. I have so nice memories of doing the book in #Tajikistan. Unfortunately many of those buildings I describe in the book aren't existing anymore, rhey were torn down during the recent years. But the book is still there! That's a hospital and the pharmacy in that hospital n Gorno-Badakhshan in #Tajikistan, I took these photos back in 2008. So, they don't show the current situation. But I'm sure not much has changed since. - Tajikistan announced its first 15 cases of #covid19 infections last week - after an ongoing denial since the pandemic had officially spread in neighbouring countries. Tajikistan has one of the worst and weakest healthcare systems in the Post-Soviet hemisphere. I can't imagine what the pandemic will mean for so many people in this country, that I sincerely love.
