In 1984 I travelled to Georgia (the little country in the South Caucasus) for the first time. Then, the bazaars, fresh pomegranate, the cupolas of the legendary sulphur baths in Tbilisi seemed to be the Orient to me. When I returned in 2016, to my surprise, the country was much more European than I remembered. Not only because Central Asia, which I know very well, is more oriental and I am used to it nowadays, but also and above all, Georgia IS European, by history, its culture, believes and self-conception.
